US Sets Free Man Held at Gitmo for Seven Years, Never Charged With Any Crime: On Hunger Strike for Two and a Half Years

What a sad and despicable story.  From the BBC:

An Algerian man held for seven years by the US has arrived in France after being set free from Guantanamo Bay.

Lakhdar Boumediene was held in Bosnia in 2001, but was cleared last year of any wrongdoing and cleared for release.

He won a landmark Supreme Court case granting Guantanamo inmates the right to challenge their confinement.

The release comes on the same day that US President Barack Obama announced that he was reviving military trials for some detainees.

Earlier this month, France offered to accept Mr Boumediene, 42, after he was cleared of any wrongdoing in November by a US judge who ruled he had been illegally detained.

Mr Boumediene was flown from the US naval base in south-eastern Cuba to waiting relatives in France.

He had been on hunger strike since December 2006 and was force-fed twice a day through a nose-drip, the AFP news agency reported.

His wife and two daughters, who went to Algeria after his arrest, will also be taken in by France, it said.

Jesus Christ...really.  Imagine the rest of this page being incoherent swear words, that's what I feel like writing.  American Justice at its finest.  This INNOCENT MAN was on hunger strike for TWO AND A HALF YEARS!!!  He was completely innocent....

The old Turkish proverb comes to mind right about now.  "The fish stinks from the head."  Meaning, when the head of the government is rotten the entire country is rotten.  I'm pretty sure that all the shit we have dealt with over the last seven years ourselves proves this proverb right.  Innocent...hunger strike for TWO AND A HALF YEARS.  His life will never be the same again and America is to blame.  We threw out the concepts of justice and law for the expediency of saying we had captured those responsible for our fears.

These atrocities can not be swept under the rug.  They happened and are continuing to happen.  We our either a nation laws and high ideals or we are not.  Right now we are not.  If the US can do the right thing and give Hermann Goering a fair trial, we can give the rest of the detainees at Gitmo and elsewhere a fair trial.  Otherwise, all of the words stating the US as a beacon for the world to follow are truly hallow.  Two and a half years...disgusting.
