Today's selection comes from Daniel Boone:

One day I undertook a tour through the country, and the diversity and beauties of nature I met with in this charming season, expelled every gloomy and vexatious thought.

Daniel Boone is now a Folk Hero who helped explore and settle the old frontier.  He personified the American spirit for adventure and optimism.  He was also, as noted above, a great admirer of the beauty of nature and the wilderness.  Unfortunately, that wild beauty is disappearing everyday from America.  Forests, wetlands, rivers ad even mountains are being swept away.  More needs to be done to protect our country's landscape that inspired Boone all of those years ago.  Otherwise future Americans will only read of it in books.
